St Joseph’s Cathedral

Two grey stone towers at the end of a short square, consecrated in 1886 and built to recall Notre-Dame de Paris at about half the confidence. It has weathered into something far better than the design: a hundred and forty years of Hanoi’s damp has left the stone streaked and blackened, and it looks much older than it is.

It went up on the site of the Bao Thien pagoda, which was cleared to build it — a piece of the city’s history that the building itself does not mention.

What it costs

⭐ Free. It is a working parish church with a full Mass schedule, not a monument. The side door is the usual way in outside service times.

⚠️ Cover your shoulders and knees. This is enforced here in a way it is not at the pagodas.

When to go

Around the evening Mass, when the square outside fills with parked motorbikes and the cafés opposite fill with everybody who is not going in. At Christmas the whole street is impassable.

Getting there

Five minutes west of Hoan Kiem Lake along Nha Tho, which is one of the pleasanter short streets in the city.

If you only have an hour

Look at the front from the far end of the square — it is designed to be seen from there — then go inside for the nave, then take a seat at one of the cafés on Nha Tho and look back at it. That is the whole thing.

What people get wrong

⚠️ It is often locked between services. If the west doors are shut, try the door on the right-hand side of the building; if that is shut too, come back at Mass time rather than assuming it is closed for good.
